Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,
Have you noticed sometimes that there is a gap between how you want to act and how you actually act?
I am not calling you out specifically, by the way, because we all do this.
How would you feel if you could narrow that gap? I believe you would feel more joy, more peace and you would stop spending as much time thinking about your needs or your mistakes and have more time to focus on helping other people.
Jesus wants to help us narrow and maybe even close that gap. He did it with Peter. Could he do it for us?
Let’s talk more about this at worship this weekend. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Blessings,
WELCOME BACK:
At Ascension Lutheran School’s Back to School Fair, students and their families learned about program offerings from the school and from the church as well. There were displays of Children-Youth-Family Ministry, Fair Trade, Global Ministries Team, and Community Concerns, plus Art Trek and much more. Topping off the fun was a photo cube provided by AL School’s PALS. Thanks to Chris Clark for the photos.
Your Opportunity:

Looking for Members Who Like to Meet New People
“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” – Romans 15:7
One of the greatest virtues that a Christian church can have is to have a reputation as a friendly and welcoming community. As members I’m sure we all believe Ascension Lutheran Church is a friendly place. However, we can do better!
We want to raise up and bring greater emphasis in making sure visitors and members are getting connected with greater opportunities for conversation, and hopefully, more involvement with ministries of the church.
Starting a greeter program after each Sunday service is a start in this effort to make more connections with the people who come to our church services. It will be a fun opportunity to meet many new people and find new church friends!
It will be organized and scheduled like our sign up for ushers, communion assistants, readers, etc. Please call Outreach Team member Ralph Bogeberg (805) 657-7766 or Emilee at the church office (805) 495-0406 for more information about the program and to answer any questions you might have.

HAPPY MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY: “On September 19, 2023, we will celebrate the best decision we ever made! To God be the glory,” say Allen and Lillian Carter
70 Years of Wedded Bliss
The family of Lillian Mildred (Wilson) Carter and Allen Carter, Jr. are proud to announce their 70th wedding anniversary, Sept. 19, 2023.
Lillian and Allen are natives of Smithville, Texas and graduates of Smithville Colored High School (SCHS).
Lillian is the daughter of Vivian Peterson and Ran Wilson and Allen is the son of Willie Ruth (Preston) Carter and Allen Carter.
At the young age of 15, while still enrolled in high school, Lillian and Allen were married at Live Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Smithville, Texas, on Saturday September 19, 1953, by Reverend George Stewart.
At the next meeting of the PTA held after the wedding, parents voted to expel Lillian and Allen and no longer allow them to attend public school.
However, due to the tenacity and persistence of Principal William A. Gordon, who lobbied long and hard for Lillian and Allen’s right to remain in school, the decision of the high school PTA to expel them was overturned by the school board and they were allowed to return to school and complete their high school education. For September 10th, when we will have one worship service at 10 AM, we are inviting everyone to bring a bag of groceries for our Friday Food Pantry and place it in the sanctuary under the woodcarving of Jesus ascending into heaven. Thanks Chris Clark for the photos.
