This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

July 2, 2023

Friends in Christ,

So many things in our world that claim to be reliable and long-lasting just aren’t. So it is the journey of a lifetime to learn to trust that God’s steadfast love is never going to disappoint us.

Here is the way that the psalmist puts it:  “I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.  I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.”

Join us this weekend as we work on trusting in the steadfastness of God’s promises.

In gratitude for all the ways you are the hands and feet of Jesus,

A Date to Remember for Youth and Young Adults

The 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering has been expanded – there will now be a Young Adult Gathering for those ages 18-25 held at the same time. If you or someone you know was denied the chance for a youth gathering experience by covid cancellations, this could be a great opportunity. The dates are July 16-20, 2024. Check out the Created to Be online information HERE and stay tuned for more information about scholarship possibilities.

Accordionaires Coming to Ascension July 9

Mark your calendars for July 9. Our 9 o’clock worship service will be enhanced by special music from the Los Angeles Accordionaires “Pops” Orchestra. The conductor is Janet Hane, a member of our church.

One of the largest accordion orchestras of its kind on the West Coast, the Accordionaires consists entirely of accordions and percussion instruments.

“Unlike the typical accordion bands that have only accordion sounds, the Accordionaires enjoy duplicating the sounds of a string orchestra by playing individual parts and utilizing specific reeds,” according to an Accordionaires press release. “Included are a few specialized digital accordions used to produce ‘voices’ that further enhance the orchestra experience.”

We can’t wait!

Fair Trade Lane Will Be Open Sunday July 16

Mark Your Calendars — Fair Trade Lane Will Be Open July 16 and August 13 from 10:10-10:55 AM. This is a great opportunity to stock up on Fair Trade favorites, including Red Barn Family Farms Cheddar Cheese, for summer gatherings, picnics, or a treat to enjoy yourself!

If ordering in advance works best for you, we’re doing that too!  Orders for your Fair Trade favorites can be placed until Sunday, July 9 (6PM).   Order forms are available HERE.

The June/July 2023 ordering form can be found on Ascension’s Fair Trade webpage as well. Paper copies are available in the church office and in the blue folder at the Information Desk in the Narthex.

We’re very happy to have recently added a John August Swanson print to the Fair Trade Lane art gallery. His “Psalm 85” is a wonderful addition.  We love the images and the written messages too –everything in his “Psalm 85” speaks to our mission of justice for people and planet. Let us know if you have drawings, photos, paintings or other works of art you would like to share and display on Fair Trade Lane. We’re easy to find – just drop us a note at .

We have a very important notice to share with everyone:  Prices for some of your Fair Trade favorites will be increasing after July 31, 2023. We’ve just been notified by Equal Exchange, one of our Fair Trade product partners, of price increases due to their increased costs of packaging, transport, and agricultural products from farmers, cooperatives and partners around the globe. We’ll be carefully reviewing all of the information in the coming weeks.  An updated price list will be published and shared before the next ordering opportunity and before August 13 when we open the doors of Fair Trade Lane for end of summer shopping for your Fair Trade favorites.  The prices you’ve enjoyed in the past, as reflected on the June /July 2023 Order Form, will apply through July 31, 2023.

Congregational Meeting

Our congregational meeting last Sunday included votes on leadership for this new fiscal year and approval of the budgets. Outgoing Council President Ed Klodt did his usual excellent job leading the meeting, with Council Past President Carrie Leonard offering the opening prayer.

Pastor Tim Delkeskamp was presented with a beautiful coffee table book about climbing in recognition of his 20 years of ministry at Ascension.

Treasurer Dave Harkins went over finances for church, school and foundation and the budget was passed. We appreciate his gift for simplifying complex information.

Incoming Council President Jeannette Ruggiero made remarks via video.

School Board President Scott Bean, Foundation President Sandra Howe and other Ascension leaders, as well as staff, were recognized.

One Ascension members filled Founders Hall for the meeting. Thank you to all who attended.

Pastor Tim talked about what’s next. Get ready to be the blessing.

Ed Klodt showed a spectacular photo from his recent trip to Yosemite, reminding us to take time to appreciate the awesomeness of God in our lives, and to look back and see how far we’ve come.

In case you missed it, here is the congregational meeting packet that’s full of great information.

Our Prayer

We pray that you may once again meet the Risen Christ through the Word and Sacrament ministry, and through the fellowship of this family of faith.

If you do not have a church home, we would like to invite you to worship with our Ascension family again.

All people who are baptized and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

May God bless you in your worship!
