Detail of stained glass window at Bath Centenary United Methodist Church in Bath, NY, USA. Depicts the story of Mary and Martha
Grace and peace to you my sisters and brothers in Christ!
This week we hear from Mary and Martha in Luke 10.
Read it ahead of time and consider where you see yourself in the story. For me, this story is all about discernment.
Let’s talk about how to discern where Jesus is calling us this weekend in worship.

Ascension’s Early Childhood Center is a special place, as our latest Generosity Team video shows again. Thank you to everyone in our One Ascension family for your support of the mission of the ECC. We encourage you not only to view this video, but to share it with friends and on social media!

In Need Of Prayer
Remembering Pastor Howie Wennes
As Pastor Howie Wennes’ many friends at Ascension begin to come to grips with his death this past Tuesday, July 12, we pray for his wife Mary Wennes and their children, Tim and Sally, and all the Wennes’ grandchildren and other loved ones. Taking comfort in the knowledge of his heavenly welcome, we join the many offering tributes to the former bishop, ELCA World Hunger advocate, Interim CLU president, Interim Ascension Lutheran Church Senior Pastor and guiding force behind our annual Gifts of Hope campaigns that have raised more than a million dollars to help those in need near and far.
The following story, from June of 2016, reminds us of his warmth and humor in addition to his vision and achievements:
It’s hard to believe now, but there was a time when the Reverend Dr. Howard Wennes thought he had successfully eluded God’s beckoning finger. “Keep Your hands off me and I’ll send two missionaries to Africa,” the hard-working economics major promised God. He intended to become a success in the business world.
You might say God re-cut that deal.

Michelangelo Part 2
Even if you missed last week’s adult ed class on this great creator of sacred art, don’t miss out on Part 2! Join Pastor Steve for the class, featuring Bishop Robert Barron’s “The Pivotal Players” video in which Bishop Barron and his team travel to locations that played a significant role in the formation and vocation of Michelangelo, which in turn formed the life of the church.

Flat Jesus Challenge
Pastor Julie recently talked about the Flat Jesus Challenge in her Children’s Chat at worship. Kids can color in this drawing of Jesus and take it with them wherever they go! It’s a vacation time activity that reminds us Jesus is with us always, near or far.
Here are the instructions:
Take me with you on vacation…To the beach, the park, and even the gas station. Snap a pic and include me, too. Remember I am always with you!

Our Prayer
We pray that you may once again meet the Risen Christ through the Word and Sacrament ministry, and through the fellowship of this family of faith.
If you do not have a church home, we would like to invite you to worship with our Ascension family again.
All people who are baptized and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
May God bless you in your worship!
