Calling of the Apostles

Hubert Landa – Awakening of the Daughter of Jairus – Circa 1900

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

This week it is all about Jairus, a “ruler of the synagogue” who is trying to help his sick 12-year-old daughter and an unnamed woman who has burned through all her help yet remains sick.

This story in the 5th chapter of Mark is a story of two very different people that have one thing in common: They are desperate. Their story will teach us an incredibly beautiful lesson if (and only if) we can see ourselves in these two people.

So, let’s explore their stories this week. And let’s learn what Jesus has to teach us so that we can have an abundant, joyful and fruitful life.

Looking forward to worshiping  with you this weekend!

Blessings,

Faith & Fun at VBS 2024

We are in the midst of an exciting, faith-filled week at VBS! We’re learning about the ELCA World Hunger’s work with animals, God’s love, and how to love and serve others while caring for creation.

We are fighting hunger locally with a service project and we are excited for a petting zoo on Friday where we will meet some of our Bible buddy animals in person. We got to meet one of Pastor Chamie’s chickens on Monday!

Our offerings this week support ELCA World Hunger, and we invite the whole congregation to participate.

We have a mighty team of volunteers here all week and also supporters behind the scenes who donated, gathered supplies, prepared crafts, brought snacks, made decorations, and set up. We are grateful for each and every one of you. Special thanks to all of the church staff, ECC, and the school for their incredible support. We are grateful to the families who brought their children to VBS this week.

Our goal is to ensure every child feels loved and has opportunities to grow in faith. Thank you for being a part of VBS. We couldn’t do this fun work without your help.

Last Call for Ray of Life

Expectations Exceeded!

We now have raised enough funds to provide more than 170 Ray of Life solar power light kits for Ukraine — a success far exceeding expectations! This is the final week of the fundraiser. Thank you to all those who have contributed and helped in this drive, especially to our tireless Global Ministries Team leader, Louise Evenson.

This past Sunday, Louise visited New Hope Lutheran Church in Agoura Hills to talk about Ray of Life solar kits and thank people there who have already contributed to ROL to bring LIGHT and HOPE to people in Ukraine. Her temple talk is HERE.

DONATE HERE

You won’t want to miss the first monthly prayer event: Wed., July 10, at 7 PM in the sanctuary.

Carolyn Coleman-Grady will be doing some teaching on prayer and her sister, Carmen Carter, will sing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow.” Some of you know their parents, Allen and Lillian Carter. Their other sister, Cynthia, preached here on Mother’s Day weekend.

ALCTO.org/24in24 has the calendar and Ephesians 3:14-21 for handy daily prayer reference.

Pastor Search

The Call Committee for our next Associate Pastor would like to thank the congregation for continued prayers and expressions of support – they are greatly appreciated! As shared in the June 23 Congregational Meeting, the committee is diligently continuing its work under the leadership of committee co-chairs Tom Lindros and Gwen Thompson and is applying the complimentary skillsets of all individuals across the committee, which has contributed to a productive and thoughtful call process.

The committee is continuing to work with intention and urgency, guided by discernment of the Holy Spirit’s direction and timing, meeting on a weekly basis and carefully reviewing all applicants and suggestions from the congregation. Please continue your prayers as the committee seeks the Lord’s blessing in directing the work of the call committee and in opening the heart and mind of our next associate pastor to receive this call.

The Call Committee invites the congregation to continue to reach out with questions, referrals or suggestions at . This inbox is monitored with high frequency and all emails received to-date have been reviewed and considered with great interest.

Please continue to pray for God’s guidance and blessing as this work continues, for those involved in this crucial process, and for the perfect candidates to find their ways to Ascension.

This space is dedicated to keep our church community apprised of the transition activities as we seek an Associate Pastor and a Youth Director.  We are guided by Jeremiah 29:11, leaning especially into “…to give you a future with hope…” knowing that God has a plan for One Ascension!  Is there a pastoral prospect you would like to have considered? A promising candidate for Youth Director? Please make them aware of these opportunities and descriptions of the positions by sharing THIS LINK.
