This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

June 25, 2023

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

I have good news and I have bad news.  The good news is that Jesus is the truth. In him we have grace, forgiveness, and salvation. He loves us and has invited us to experience an abundant life by learning from him and telling others about him. The bad news is this: people don’t always like hearing the truth. Sometimes it makes them uncomfortable, sometimes they react in unpredictable ways. Maybe you have experienced that? This bad news can make life hard sometimes, so we need to be reassured by Jesus’ words for us. Let’s hear those words together this weekend for the sake of the mission we share.

Blessings,

World Refugee Day

This week, people from around the globe recognized World Refugee Day. It is a critical time for refugees in a number of hot spots afflicted by human conflict, climate change, and economic challenges. ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and LIRS President Krish O’Mara Vignarajah bring the Christian perspective. Read their Joint Statement for World Refugee Day HERE.

A Note from Pastor Steve

Regarding Jail Ministry

Did you know that our jail visitation ministry in Ventura and Santa Paula has started again? (It was on pause during the pandemic.)

Yesterday we told this news to Shirley and Verlon Meyer at their new home Atria Las Posas Assisted Living in Camarillo and thanked them for their many years of leading our jail ministry. They were delighted with the news of it beginning again.

Thank you for keeping this ministry in your prayers. We invite you to consider participating in it.

If you have any questions, contact Carrie Leonard or Eric Berg.

Fair Trade Lane Will Be Open Sunday July 16

Mark Your Calendars — Fair Trade Lane Will Be Open July 16 and August 13 from 10:10-10:55 AM. This is a great opportunity to stock up on Fair Trade favorites, including Red Barn Family Farms Cheddar Cheese, for summer gatherings, picnics (maybe a picnic dinner before a Kingsmen Shakespeare performance at CLU?), camping, or backyard barbeques.

If ordering in advance works best for you, we’re doing that too!  Orders for your Fair Trade favorites can be placed until Sunday, July 9 (6PM).   Order forms are available HERE.

The June/July 2023 ordering form can be found on Ascension’s Fair Trade webpage as well.  Paper copies are available in the church office and in the blue folder at the Information Desk in the Narthex.

If summer days inspire you to draw, paint, or take photos, we would love to display your colorful and inviting visual images of what Fair Trade means to us, to farmers and artisans, and to our planet. Let us know if you have art to share to help make Fair Trade Lane a welcoming and inspiring place. We’re easy to find – just drop us a note at .

Accordionaires Coming to Ascension July 9

Mark your calendars for July 9. Our 9 o’clock worship service will be enhanced by special music from the Los Angeles Accordionaires “Pops” Orchestra. The conductor is Janet Hane, a member of our church.

One of the largest accordion orchestras of its kind on the West Coast, the Accordionaires consists entirely of accordions and percussion instruments.

“Unlike the typical accordion bands that have only accordion sounds, the Accordionaires enjoy duplicating the sounds of a string orchestra by playing individual parts and utilizing specific reeds,” according to an Accordionaires press release. “Included are a few specialized digital accordions used to produce ‘voices’ that further enhance the orchestra experience.”

We can’t wait!

Offerings & Attendance

This summer:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

July 10-14

We need lots of volunteers for Vacation Bible School!

Did you know:

  •  We have roles that require zero prep?
  •  Those 7th grade and up can help!
  •  Even if you’re not available the week of July 10, we can use you to help us prepare.
  •  If you think you can’t or you feel a little scared of the idea, remember: that’s often how God’s call feels!  😊

Come and talk to me!

Can you help?  Want more info.?  Talk to Pastor Julie:

Do you have a musical talent that you would be willing to share with the congregation? Either instrumental, vocal or dance, or some combination of those.

We are in need of special music during our summer services.

Please email and your information will be forwarded to the worship planners.

Our Prayer

We pray that you may once again meet the Risen Christ through the Word and Sacrament ministry, and through the fellowship of this family of faith.

If you do not have a church home, we would like to invite you to worship with our Ascension family again.

All people who are baptized and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

May God bless you in your worship!
