This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

June 23, 2024

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

Did you know that one of the names for the building that we worship together in is a “nave?”

Most people just call it a “church” but in the early times, the word “church” never referred to a building, it referred to a people. The building was called a nave.

This is a word that comes from the Latin word “navis” where we get the word “navy.” “Navis” means boat in Latin.

Yes, the idea is that when we gather together as a church we are all in the same boat! So where does this image come from? Some say Noah’s ark. But more say it comes from the story in Mark 4 where Jesus’ disciples are heading across the Sea of Galilee and a storm comes up.

What an image! We are the ones going through a storm but we are safe because we have the one who has more power than the storm with us in the boat.

Let’s talk more about this in worship this weekend! See you soon!

Our Congregational meeting is coming up THIS Sunday

In case you missed it, here is Pastor Tim’s message about the meeting from earlier this week:

Grace and peace to you Ascension Family,

There’s incredible stuff going on at Ascension. I’ll be sharing a report on some of this and you’ll also get a peek into our budget and other business items at Ascension you may not be familiar with.

Beforehand, we are giving you the agenda and our budget for you to review. We are hoping that your reading it prior to the meeting might make our time together more efficient.

Here is the link to the agenda, budget, etc.

So thankful for your partnership in ministry,

World Refugee Day Opportunity

June 20 is World Refugee Day, and with it comes an opportunity to help unlock a $100,000 matching gift for Global Refuge (formerly LIRS) — which has been helping resettle and reunite families fleeing from war, oppression and disaster since 1939.

You can help in their mission to “foster a world of just and welcoming communities.”
Here is the link to the June 20 matching gift opportunity.

You won’t want to miss the first monthly prayer event: Wed., July 10, at 7 PM in the sanctuary.

Carolyn Coleman-Grady will be doing some teaching on prayer and her sister, Carmen Carter, will sing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow.” Some of you know their parents, Allen and Lillian Carter. Their other sister, Cynthia, preached here on Mother’s Day weekend.

ALCTO.org/24in24 has the calendar and Ephesians 3:14-21 for handy daily prayer reference.

Vacation Bible School Needs You to Help Decorate

Come decorate for VBS Sunday June 23! After the 9 AM service/before the 10:30 service, we will start to decorate around the campus. At 1 PM we will bring heavy set pieces into the sanctuary (after the congregational meeting) and could use help moving.

Contact Jenni Klemp — or (310) 849-5651. It’s especially appreciated when people RSVP in advance so that Jenni can know who to expect and where to meet, etc.

CARDBOARD TUBES **If you have long cardboard tubes lying around at home you can bring them to the church anytime before Sunday.

A BALLOON PUMP ** Ideally motorized but even a hand pump will be good.

Jenni is still looking for help with photography, and a fill in for a day at a station, in addition to decorations volunteers.

Can you bring in cookies? Let her know.

VBS Registration is still open for a limited time.

No walk-in registrations.

A Note from Denise Cortes of Harbor House:

Last week, we learned from Lutheran Social Services that they are shutting their office in the Community Conscience building at 80 E Hillcrest in Thousand Oaks.

This is sad news for the unhoused who live behind that building. It will undoubtedly impact our work. We are anticipating an increase in our daily meal attendees and looking at other ways to fill the gaps in support.

We deeply appreciate the unwavering support of our donors and supporters. If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands, your volunteer hours would be a valuable contribution in serving these individuals in need.

Wishing you all a peaceful summer filled with family, friends, and time to reflect.

May you be well,

Great news:

Our Ray of Life drive for solar light and power kits in Ukraine has now passed 160 units!

How did a Lutheran congregation on the shores of Lake Superior inspire a Lutheran congregation in Southern California to bring light and hope to people in Ukraine? You might call it a faith link.

Caught in the Act of Being the Blessing

“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we may walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

Here are photos showing Ascension members in action, taken from our social media in the past week or so. Together, they make a snapshot of One Ascension caught Being the Blessing.

In one week alone, some 77 seniors participated in our six Christian Life Hour worship services at six senior living places in town. Norm Guetschoff led four of them and Pastor Steve led two. (If you’d like to help serve in this way, please let them know. They would like to expand.)

Our quilters worked on their latest batch of beautiful quilts for Lutheran World Relief, creating objects with a variety of uses that are also a constant reminder that someone cares a lot.

Our Hot Meals Ministry prepared and packaged meals for homeless people, an activity that takes place on the third Tuesday of each month. Want to help? Sign Up here.

A group from Ascension visited MESA, the tiny house community in Ojai for young people who have just aged out of foster care, to learn about the mission there and pray with leaders. Expect to hear more about MESA’s work in coming weeks.
