Calling of the Apostles

“The Calling of Samuel” by John Opie

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

This weekend, the graduating seniors from high school are getting their faith quilts. It is one of my favorite Ascension traditions and this year I wouldn’t miss it for the world as our “baby” is one of the blessed students who will be receiving a quilt. Therefore, I have the Sunday off from NoHo First UMC, which made Tim say, “Hey, why don’t you preach, too, since you’re going to be around?”

At worship, we will hear the story of Samuel and Eli. What a fitting story in the season of graduations. Samuel hears a voice calling his name and at first thinks it is Eli. He soon discovers, though, that it is none other than the very voice of God.

Our graduates are trying to discern God’s call on their lives. But discerning God’s call isn’t just for graduates. Rather it is a lifelong practice for all us who follow in the way of Jesus.

Where is God calling me today? In this time? In this place? How do I know it’s God? How do I figure it out? Is it possible to hear God’s voice?

We will explore those questions together this weekend. I look forward to seeing you in worship!

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Chamie

Be the Blessing:

Connecting Your Heart To a Need

There’s lots of interest in being the blessing at One Ascension. We continue to approve grant requests for new ministries and the expansion of existing ministries locally and worldwide.

But many Ascension members have asked: “Where do I start? How can I figure out how best to serve others?”

That’s the magic of the circles.

They can help us get started.

Our greatest success and fulfillment lie where these three circles intersect. That’s where our ministry heart is.

First, we all bring a diversity of skills and resources to the table so that different things can get done. Some of us are visionaries. Others are good at coordinating things. Still others have gifts of hospitality and caring for others. What are YOU good at?

Second, each of us sees needs in the world – in our church, our neighborhoods, our communities, our schools, the world – especially among disadvantaged populations. We all see people’s needs firsthand. The hungry, the unhoused, the abused, the broken, the addicted, the forgotten. What Work Do YOU Think Needs Doing?

And thirdly, there are specific acts of service that can bring you unimaginable satisfaction and delight. It’s the kind of ministry that lifts you out of bed on a Saturday morning excited to get started. What brings YOU joy?

To help you focus on where your ministry heart is, Ascension has created a Spiritual Gifts Inventory. It’s a super simple assessment tool. CLICK HERE and you’ll be launched into the initial assessment. Once you complete that assessment, you’ll be linked to current ministries at Ascension that will welcome you with open arms.

Be the Blessing isn’t just to amplify our existing ministries, though. Ascension is providing grant money to start brand new ministries if your heart leads you to do something completely different. Information and a short form for that is on the Be the Blessing website page, as well.

Your project doesn’t have to be big. Most of the Be the Blessing grants approved so far have been for small, simple projects that are making a big difference in people’s lives.

If you have an idea for a new ministry or how to expand an existing one, check out our Be the Blessing page on Ascension’s website.

Come join us in ministry. Apply for a grant. Show us where your heart is.

June 2  Adult ED:

Reflections On Faith and Life, People and Places

Over the past twenty plus years, I have written many hymn texts, and I have also written reflections on places Jean and I have traveled or people we have seen.  I have previously shared my hymn texts with you.  Now I am pleased to have the opportunity to share these other writings in the hope that they will inspire you to see in a new way the things you experience in the midst of your daily lives.

I invite you to join me for the Adult Sunday School Class on JUNE 2, where I will share with you the writings and the inspiration behind each of them.

Benevolence for June:

Global Refuge

(formerly Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service)

Welcoming newcomers since 1939.

It is a moving and gratitude-inspiring experience to share a few of the stories of the men, women, children – families – helped by Global Refuge.  The grandma who packed four generations of family into a car and left a lifetime of memories in Ukraine. The translator who worked with the United States’ mission in Afghanistan for 10 years, facing incredible danger… So many have been assisted in finding new homes, new opportunities, new lives, thanks to Global Refuge.

From the website: “Driven by the belief in human dignity and the intrinsic value of every individual. For more than 80 years, Global Refuge has provided the resources, guidance, and community to help forge a way forward for New Americans. We’re committed to helping people reimagine the possibilities while providing a soft place to land. With more than 1,000 partners and 50,000 volunteers, we are the largest faith-based national nonprofit exclusively dedicated to helping restore a sense of home to immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. Since 1939, we’ve built a legacy of compassion by walking alongside more than 750,000 new neighbors as they rebuild their lives in the United States.”

June 22-23 will be Global Refugee weekend.

This is what GRATITUDE Looks Like!

GRATITUDE for LIGHT and HOPE in Zaporizhzhia in January, 2024

Will you help us send more light and hope to Ukraine?

Happy 1st  Anniversary Fair Trade Lane!

Time flies when you’re having fun.  On June 11, 2023, the Ascension Community celebrated the Grand Opening of Fair Trade Lane!  In this past year, there’s been lots of meeting, greeting & creating happening on Fair Trade Lane on Thursday afternoons & Sunday mornings. And, of course, shopping too.  In September, 2023, the outside entrance to Fair Trade Lane was enhanced with a beautiful awning — a wonderful gift & a welcoming way to invite everyone in to this special little place located at the intersection of Faith & Fair Trade. In April, generous gifts gave Fair Trade Lane a stunning makeover – this special little place now enhanced with beautiful new doors that easily and fully open to display a full array of Fair Trade deliciousness. The vision for Fair Trade Lane was that it be a joyous and welcoming place to meet, greet, create and  promote justice for people and planet through Fair Trade. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit Fair Trade Lane, now is a great time to do so!

Fair Trade Lane will be open Sunday, June 9  from 10-11:30 AM.

Coming up on July 14 – a Fair Trade double-header! Fair Trade Lane will be open (10-10:30 AM) and our new friends from Tlali Pani will join us at 10:30 AM for Adult Ed class in Founders Hall. We’ll learn how Tlali Pani promotes human, economic and environmental justice by empowering women artisans in Mexico who create beautiful textiles and delicious chocolate products.

A Note of Thanks

“My family and I would like to thank my Ascension family for all the cards, calls, prayers and support, during Dick’s hospitalization and passing. What a wonderful, supportive, compassionate and caring congregation. It was a great comfort for us to know so many were praying. We would especially like to thank Pastor Tim and Pastor Steve for their support. They are truly great shepherds. The attendance at Dick’s memorial service was a great tribute to the man he was. Thank you for honoring him as you did! With love and God’s blessing to each of you. – D. Ruwe and family.
