This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

May 26, 2024

Trinity Sunday

Calling of the Apostles

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

John 3:16 is one of the most, if not the most well-known verse in the New Testament:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

We will hear it this week in the context of our Gospel lesson where Jesus encounters a pharisee named Nicodemus. I think Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus is endlessly fascinating.

And I think that we have more in common with Nicodemus than we might first realize.

For example, Nicodemus does not fit the stereotype that we often give him. Neither do you. Nicodemus is a real person with real problems. So are you.

Though Nicodemus didn’t always hit the mark, he had a real desire to do the right thing. So do you. This is why Jesus loved Nicodemus.

It is also why He loves you.

Let’s talk more about this infinitely fascinating conversation in worship on this Holy Trinity weekend. See you in church!

Blessings,

God Bless Our Confirmands:

Please pray for the four confirmands who affirmed their baptisms here last Sunday: Ryan Harner, Thomas Ho, Avery Roberts, and Jake Thomas. Now that they have confirmed their faith, pray that their faith be strengthened and that they have God’s presence and peace in their life. Pray that God leads them in their paths and that they may more fully come to know Jesus and may that bring them joy. (Photos by Mark Foreman and Shannon Lomeli)

ENDING THE SCHOOL YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE:

Pastor Search

Last Sunday we received a visitor from our Southwest California Synod, Julia Morales, who is assisting with our pastoral search. She was able to attend both the 9 AM and 10:30 AM services and have a tour of the campus, including our early childhood center, and had great feedback to share. She commented that the time spent with our congregation was incredibly valuable in helping her better identify candidates that might be a good fit and in further developing the questions she will ask candidates. Thank you to all those who introduced themselves to our synod rep and answered her questions, helping to make her time here productive and successful.

The Call Committee is continuing its efforts to ensure that candidates understand how vibrant our One Ascension community is  through assets like this new video (CLICK HERE) on social media.

Thanks to Hannah Hurdle. (Watch this space for additional content.)

Is there a pastoral prospect you would like to have considered? A promising candidate for Youth Director? Please make them aware of these opportunities and descriptions of the positions by sharing THIS LINK.

Reflections On Faith and Life, People and Places

Over the past twenty plus years, I have written many hymn texts, and I have also written reflections on places Jean and I have traveled or people we have seen.  I have previously shared my hymn texts with you.  Now I am pleased to have the opportunity to share these other writings in the hope that they will inspire you to see in a new way the things you experience in the midst of your daily lives.

I invite you to join me for the Adult Sunday School Class on JUNE 2, where I will share with you the writings and the inspiration behind each of them.

Happy 1st  Anniversary Fair Trade Lane!

Time flies when you’re having fun.  On June 11, 2023, the Ascension Community celebrated the Grand Opening of Fair Trade Lane!  In this past year, there’s been lots of meeting, greeting & creating happening on Fair Trade Lane on Thursday afternoons & Sunday mornings. And, of course, shopping too.  In September, 2023, the outside entrance to Fair Trade Lane was enhanced with a beautiful awning — a wonderful gift & a welcoming way to invite everyone in to this special little place located at the intersection of Faith & Fair Trade. In April, generous gifts gave Fair Trade Lane a stunning makeover – this special little place now enhanced with beautiful new doors that easily and fully open to display a full array of Fair Trade deliciousness. The vision for Fair Trade Lane was that it be a joyous and welcoming place to meet, greet, create and  promote justice for people and planet through Fair Trade. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit Fair Trade Lane, now is a great time to do so!

Fair Trade Lane will be open Sunday, June 9  from 10-11:30 AM.

Coming up on July 14 – a Fair Trade double-header! Fair Trade Lane will be open (10-10:30 AM) and our new friends from Tlali Pani will join us at 10:30 AM for Adult Ed class in Founders Hall. We’ll learn how Tlali Pani promotes human, economic and environmental justice by empowering women artisans in Mexico who create beautiful textiles and delicious chocolate products.

Ray of Life Progress Report

Did you see the progress report in the west narthex this past weekend, showing how many Ray of Life solar light kits we have donated so far for the people of Ukraine? As of last week, we were up to 110 and counting!

Thanks to Pastor Scott Maxwell-Doherty for designing and making this poster. Every light lit represents ten solar light kits donated.

The need is urgent, as this New York Times story underscores.

The help these lights provide is great. For example, we have learned of one instance with 18 people, including children and grandmothers, living in a basement, relying on one Ray of Life kit as their only source of light. We have also had reports of a group of chaplains taking a truckload of supplies including Ray of Life kits provided by Ascension to an area that has been under assault.

We will continue to update our progress. Click here if you’d like to help us raise this number.

Light brings hope.  Hope keeps people alive.

Thank you.

A Celebration

FROM FACEBOOK: Thanks to Camryn Force, on our staff as Staff Accountant, for beginning a new church staff tradition: honoring staff members on their work anniversaries.

On Tuesday she surprised Pastor Steve and Stacy Bosco with a framed number of each work anniversary with a “word cloud” of words suggested by all the other staff members about them.

Seventeen years (today) for Pastor Steve and twelve years for Stacy on May 30 as our Communication Director. (The two of them do our social media posts.)

We enjoyed having Stacy’s husband, Dominick, here and is in the photo with Stacy and the pastors.

Then the part that brought the laughter was the new tradition that each person being recognized for a work anniversary has to have the “holy grail” sitting on their desk until the next staff person has an anniversary! Fun!

We do appreciate every staff person and thank them for all the gifts they bring to their ministries and to the good teamwork of our Ascension staff, led so well by our Executive Leadership Team, Pastor Tim, Kaylee Searway, Rich Gregory, and Jenni McCoy.

We continue to pray blessings on our Call Committee and Search Committee as they interview people to add to our staff another associate pastor and a youth director. Interviews for both positions are happening this week! Thank you for your prayers for all our staff (church, ECC, and school) and all our ministries. You are in our prayers.
