This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

May 15, 2022

Friends in Christ,

It’s pretty amazing that we get to help build the kingdom of God.  Join us this weekend as we think about what that looks like, and how not to get discouraged, from 1 Corinthians 3.  If you get the chance, pray over this beautiful chapter of Scripture before worship and you won’t be disappointed.

1 Corinthians 3 is also the theme verse at our Lutheran summer camps this summer, and they’ll be joining us this weekend and leading Sunday School between services, so it will be extra fun!  We’d also love your support at two school events: Tonight (Thursday), join us for a talk called “Healing from the Pandemic” from 7-8 pm, and Friday night at 6 pm, the school is putting on a play!

In gratitude for all the ways you are the hands a feet of Jesus,

FAIR TRADE FAIR A HIT

Thank You! And On to the Next 20 Years!

We love a party. And what a wonderful party it was!  Big, Really Big, Thank You’s go out to leaders, members and friends of Ascension’s Church, School & Foundation and our Fair Trade LA friends for the terrific collaboration that was Ascension’s May 7 Fair Trade Gift Fair.  Words seem so very inadequate to express our thanks to all who were a part of this adventure, taking it from a “what if” idea to a day of celebrating Fair Trade and its values of justice, fairness, respect and community- values we share; values that guide us every day.  Thank You Ascension Community for warmly and graciously welcoming visitors to the campus.

We thank all of the vendors, and the organizations, groups, teams, artisans and farmers behind them, that filled tables with wearables, shareables, works  CLICK HERE FOR MORE

SAM’S Tram Needs New Coordinator

SAM’s Tram is Ascension’s Senior Adult Ministries transportation service. The SAM’s Tram coordinator matches seniors from our congregation who need rides to local appointments with Ascension volunteer drivers. Brian Festerling has done an outstanding job as coordinator of this ministry. Now he is getting ready to let someone else take the wheel, so to speak. We will need someone to take the ride requests as they come in on email and send them on to drivers. If this sounds like something you would like to take on, or if you would like to know more, please contact Brian  () or Pastor Steve ()

SAM’s Tram has fulfilled 220+ ride requests since 2017. Brian relates that 69 percent are for doctor’s appointments, nine percent are for worship services, eight percent are for beauty/barber appointments, and the other fourteen percent are for “other.” Also, SAM’s Tram can always use more drivers.

He is also a Finnish Lutheran priest. He is a visiting scholar at Californian Lutheran University with funding from the Fulbright Organization.
Dr. Kallioniemi will give a presentation about Inter-Worldview dialogue — how can we promote understanding and cooperation with people of different backgrounds.

TONIGHT: Healing from the Pandemic

Ascension Lutheran School is hosting a talk by Dee Dee Mayer from Pepperdine’s Boone Center for the Family on Thursday, May 12, to guide us into healing from the pandemic.

In addition to her role at Pepperdine, Dee Dee is the former Associate Head of School for Spiritual Life at Oaks Christian School, a therapist with a thriving private practice, a Doctoral student, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and one of Principal Rich Gregory’s closest friends.

This event is free of charge for all school, ECC, and church families and their friends. It will be held from 7-8 PM in person in Pederson Hall. Childcare provided. Please rsvp to  if you’re planning to come.

Tons of Fun at Sunday School!

Our Lutheran Summer Camp (El Camino Pines)  will join us for Sunday School!

May 15th from 10:10 – 10:50 at the school lunch tables

A fun filled “camp style” experience with games,  crafts and  songs.

C’mon Ascension—we’re almost there!

Please help Cam Lorentson recover the loss of his tools and truck accessories.

As you may know, he recently had his truck stolen — a truck that has carried countless loads for Ascension through the years. Insurance is covering the basics, but a number of important items will have to be replaced out of pocket.

When Ascension needs Cam, he’s there—let’s be there for him!

See the GoFundMe page HERE.

Calling All Graduates and Families of Graduates!

We are planning a congratulations tribute to all of Ascension’s sons and daughters who are completing milestones in education this year — and WE DON’T WANT TO LEAVE ANYONE OUT!

Families, we need your graduating student’s NAME, SCHOOL and, if applicable, COLLEGE DEGREE.

Please email , or drop off your information at the church office.

Can you help?
