Easter Blessings 2024

Calling of the Apostles

Grace and peace to you my family in Christ,

Are you ready for a party? Woohoo! I don’t care if it’s going to rain. Let it! We are going to party anyway. Why? Because we have good news to celebrate.

It’s the big one. It’s when we get to say… “He is risen… He is risen indeed!” and sing with reckless abandon.

It’s when we get to watch the kids run around, collect eggs and eat breakfast together.

In other words, we get to be the church and celebrate the event that changed everything. Let’s go!!

See you this weekend… rain or shine. He is risen!

Blessings,

Crosses for Good Friday

The dominant symbol for the Christian church is the cross.  The crucifixion of Jesus is both the event that wins our salvation and Jesus’ enthronement as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Of all days, Good Friday is the preeminent day to focus on the cross.  Therefore, as you come to our service that day (March 29), you are encouraged to bring a meaningful cross of your own.  It may be a necklace or a pin that you will wear.  It may be a cross that you will carry in your hand.  It may be ornate, or plain, or rough.  It may be metal, or wood, or glass.

If you have a cross that is meaningful to you, please bring it to Good Friday as we focus on the cross and on God’s gift of salvation for the world — and for each of us.

On the Border Through Their Own Eyes

APRIL 7, 2024

LIBRARY, 10:30-11:30 AM

In February, Paul and Louise Evenson participated in a BORDER IMMERSION experience to Las Cruces, NM and El Paso, TX, sponsored by Lutheran Immigration and Refuge Service (Global Refuge).

Every news cycle reminds us about our broken immigration system and the increasing number of people crossing the border. Come and hear what the Evensons learned about non-profits who are assisting people who arrive every day at our southern border coming from many different countries.

Adult Ed — April 14

BAPTISM: WORDS AND ACTIONS AND NEW LIFE

Many times each year we are blessed to be witnesses to the baptisms of infants, children, teens, and adults as we gather for worship at Ascension.  The words and actions of the service of Holy Baptism are rich with meaning.  What promises do parents and sponsors make?  What promises does God make?  Why should we regard the Sacrament of Holy Baptism as the most important event in the life of each baptized person?

I invite you to join me for the Adult Sunday School Class on April 14 at 10:30 in the library.  We will look at the baptismal service in detail and talk about the different understandings of this event.

Conejo Free Clinic, Our April Benevolence

Our monthly benevolence for April is the Conejo Free Clinic, which has been providing free services to low-income, uninsured children and adults since 1976.

CFC is run by an all-volunteer team of more than 100 medical, dental, and legal professionals – including Ascension member Debbie Kahn, the Medical Operations Director.

Our pastors and Community Concerns leader Chris Daleiden visited CFC in November and had a great tour of this facility that is of so much continuous high value in our community. Find out more HERE

How Does The Ascension Community Family Say Welcome to Refugee Families?

The Ascension community delivered:

  •  21 welcome baskets with hand-painted welcome hearts
  • $690 in gift cards along with a $400 cash gift to the Conejo Interfaith Refugee team…

…who will distribute the welcome baskets to newly arrived refugee families in SoCa.

Thank you to all the groups and families who assembled welcome baskets, the children who painted welcome hearts for each basket, the generous donations of gift cards, and the Be the Blessing grant that helped fund this Lenten service project for the ascension community.

Matthew 25:35,40  I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Small Gifts Can Make a Big Difference

What are Caring Ones? Some people have been asking.

Besides our tithes and offerings, we have a unique offering at Ascension worship services called “Caring Ones.”

Caring Ones are loose (not in an envelope) one-dollar bills that are given for the sole purpose of helping people who are unemployed, underemployed, or homeless. These small gifts given with great love bless many people in need because so many people at Ascension worship God in this way.

Oftentimes, it turns out that these gifts have been just enough, at just the right time, for just the right recipient. God has a way of making that happen.

Here is just one of the many, many letters of thanks to our congregation from a person helped by Caring Ones.

Ascension Fair Trade: April Happenings!

Fair Trade Lane will be open April 18 & April 21. Everyone is always invited.

April 21 isn’t just April 21 – it’s also Fair Trade’s Sunday Fun-Day.  Bring your taste buds & sense of adventure to our Sunday Sampler Adult Ed Class – April 21 at 10:30 AM in Founders Hall. There will be chocolate, coffee & olive oil tasting along with a bit of learning and, of course, lots of fun and fellowship.  Fair Trade Lane will be open April 21 too from 10-11:30 AM

Young artists helped us “Spring-i-fy” Fair Trade Lane in March with beautiful kites. In April, we invite artists of all ages to join us in making art to celebrate the work of some of God’s smallest creations – the Pollinators! April showers may bring May flowers but not without the work of the Pollinators.

We look forward to meeting & greeting you on Fair Trade Lane in April!

Kingsmen Park

Earth Day, officially recognized on April 22, is observed in over 192 countries and celebrated by millions of people around the world. Fair Trade items will be available for purchase.

This event is free.

The theme for our April Global Ministries Team meeting is CREATION CARE. Given that the 54th national Earth Day is April 22, we want to inform and provide practical guidance on steps everyone can participate in that help safeguard the environment and our own future.

Come to hear Christian climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe speak via YouTube, share ideas on what steps you have taken to protect our environment, and brainstorm how we all can become better stewards where we live, worship and work.

We will also construct a list of websites to inform, inspire and lead us to more understanding on helping our planet thrive. Bring information about your favorite resource to our meeting to add to our list!

Come to the Bethlehem Room on Wednesday, April 10th from 4-5 PM to listen, learn and share! All are welcome.

Pastor Search Update

This space is dedicated to keep our church community apprised of the transition activities as we seek an Associate Pastor and a Youth Director.

We are guided by Jeremiah 29:11, leaning especially into “…to give you a future with hope…” knowing that God has a plan for One Ascension!

The Call Committee has a new email address where they invite members of the congregation to reach out:

The committee would also like to invite the congregation to join us in a meeting in Founders Hall on Sunday, April 14 at 10:00-10:30 AM. This will be a time to meet the committee members, receive their prayer requests and hear from them brief updates on the process.

Is there a pastoral prospect you would like to have considered? A promising candidate for Youth Director? Please make them aware of these opportunities and descriptions of the positions by sharing THIS LINK.

Please continue to keep this process and the committees in your prayers, as we ask God to bring us the perfect candidates for our church.
