This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

January 30, 2022

Grace and peace to you my sisters and brothers in Christ,

This week in church we are reading the 2nd part of our story from Luke chapter 4.  It is the story of Jesus preaching to his hometown crowd. In this part, the crowd turns on him faster, as my dad might say, than a hot knife through butter. Let me illustrate:

Here is what Luke says in verse 22: “All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips.”

But 7 verses later this is what happens:  “They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.”

Yikes. What exactly caused this to happen? And would we have done the same if we were there?  The easy answer to the second question is “no.”  But I am not sure we should be so quick to say so. Let’s talk more about it this weekend.

See you in worship!

Blessings,

A Note of Gratitude

Thank you, Staci Hammerschmitt!

We are grateful for your dedication and hard work as our interim principal, often going above and beyond expectations and rising to many challenges. Through it all, our school and students thrived. We are blessed to have you staying on to guide and assist Mr. Gregory in his new role.

Adult Education

Jan. 30

Pastor Chamie Delkeskamp and Kristine Werner lead a class on Wondrous Composting & Wise Recycling, sponsored by The One Ascension Garden Ministry. Trash has been the talk of Thousand Oaks in recent weeks as January marks the change in the city’s trash company. The Church has something to teach us about the wonder of compost (it’s just like God to make beauty come out of ugly things) and wise recycling. Pastor Chamie will share a bit about creation care. Then she and Kristine will help you with the nitty gritty of what to do with your food waste, recyclables, and trash. Learn, too, what Ascension School students are doing with compost right on our campus. 10:10 in the library

Feb. 6

Pastor Steve will lead a discussion on Ascension’s ministries that he helps oversee. So come with your questions and ideas for these ministries: prayer, women’s ministry, senior adult ministries, adult education, community concerns, and global ministries. Founders Hall, 10:10 to 10:55

February is celebrated across the nation as Black/African American History Month.  During Black History Month, we remember that to love our neighbor and seek justice for them (Micah 6:8) we must first gain understanding and open our hearts (John 15:12).

In honor of Black History Month, we remember and celebrate the powerful work of God in and through the lives of African Americans.

Each week in February we will highlight something in this journey.

Tuesday, Feb 1.

Cal Lutheran is offering a Black History Month Kick-off from noon until 2 PM, with music, speakers and a soul food truck. MORE INFO.

Thursday, Feb. 3.

Pastor Andrea Humphrey will speak during chapel at 11:35-12:10 PM in the Samuelson Chapel. MORE INFO.

Take Faith Home with

Join Pastor Julie for a five-session series about doing faith at home. Faith 5 is a tool to use for about 5 minutes every day and see your family grow closer!

Between worship services from 10:10 to 10:50 in the Library.

We’ll hear the challenges and success of others and discuss practical ways to implement it in your home.  Come to as many as you’re able (it’s easy to catch you up)!  This practice works great with kids as young as 3!

Feb 6: Introduction and sharing highs and lows

Feb 13: How might including a Bible reading in your bedtime routine enrich your child’s well being?

Feb 20: What does it do for a family to come together nightly seeking God?

March 6: What happens to children who grow up praying for others?

March 20: Hear about the transformational power of giving and receiving a blessing every day.

Bring your kids, because Sunday School (age 3– 6th grade) is available at the same time.
