This Week At Ascension

Called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ

January 22, 2023

The Calling of Saint Peter and Saint Andrew, by James Tissot (French, 1836-1902)

.

Friends in Christ,

When the light of the world starts walking around in the world, it changes things.  Especially for a few fishermen, who find Jesus so compelling that they can’t help but drop everything, including their livelihoods, and follow him into an unknown but exciting future.

Join us this weekend as we consider how we are also called to follow the light of the world out into an unknown but exciting and Spirit-led future.

In gratitude for all the ways you are the hands and feet of Jesus,

.

Upcoming Adult Education:

2 Weeks About Youth!

Jan. 22:

Pastor Rich Gregory, Principal at Ascension Lutheran School, is completing doctoral work focusing on adolescent spiritual formation.  He will be centering his talk on the role of discipleship in the faith formation of young people.

Jan. 29:

Pastor Julie & Youth Director Dianne Beck will build on the discipleship content from the week before and talk about what that faith formation looks like at Ascension, including what we’ve heard from our youth about what they love about our church and what would help engage them more.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day & Super Bowl Game Day the Fair Trade Way!

We kick off 2023 with the first ordering opportunity of the year. Orders for Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, snacks and cheese can be placed January 15 -29, 2023. The January 2023 ordering form is posted to Ascension’s Fair Trade webpage. Paper copies are also available in the church office and in the blue folder at the Information Desk in the West Narthex.  New this time are Brewer’s Chocolate Chip & Sea Salt cookies – not too sweet and a perfect treat to enjoy with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee or tea.

This is a great opportunity to order items for Valentine’s Day giving & sharing as well as for Super Bowl Game Day noshing with family & friends – two great opportunities to celebrate the Fair Trade Way. Orders must be placed by Sunday, January 29 at Noon.  We hope to have orders ready for pick-up February 8-12. Email notice will go out with order pick-up details.

We look forward to another wonderful year of Fair Trade at Ascension as we promote justice for people and our planet through Fair Trade.  And, as we enjoy fun & fellowship in the doing!

Ascension Authors & Poets Celebrated

We are grateful to Janet Gardner for all her work organizing last weekend’s Authors’ Faire — in addition to being one of the authors presenting their works. Thanks to each of those who presented! Ascension is certainly blessed with talented writers. (Thank you Pastor Steve Herder for photos!)

Offerings & Attendance

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 18-25

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is annual ecumenical celebration, when Christians worldwide reflect on scripture together, participate in ecumenical services and share fellowship. This year’s theme is based on Isaiah 1:12-17 — “Do good; seek justice.” It was selected by the Minnesota Council of Churches, USA, in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd and the trial of the police officer responsible for his death. These events brought deep anguish, challenging Christian communities to reflect on racial injustice and ways in which they may be complicit, in addition to serving as sources of reconciliation and unity.

Gifts of Hope 2022:

Don’t Close the Barn Doors Yet!

This little piglet has a very big smile … for a very good reason! Inside this little piggy bank is $50.36 with very clear instructions that this money should be used to get 1 piglet & 2 sets of chicks for God’s Global Barnyard with GOH 2022.

Thanks to our Sunday Schoolers who made this gift possible and Rachael Bowen for helping.

Our Prayer

We pray that you may once again meet the Risen Christ through the Word and Sacrament ministry, and through the fellowship of this family of faith.

If you do not have a church home, we would like to invite you to worship with our Ascension family again.

All people who are baptized and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

May God bless you in your worship!
